Returning to Italy: The Land of my Ancestors
By Anthony Gadaleta
Hi all! After 7 years, I finally returned to beautiful Italy! The land of my ancestors and my cultural roots as an Italian-American. I stayed in my family’s hometown of Molfetta, a historic and scenic coastal community located along the Adriatic Sea in the region of Puglia. I visited for 3 weeks which is the longest that I have ever traveled for, soaking up every minute of la dolce vita. Reconnecting and reuniting with my family, exploring the region, tasting the incredible fine local cuisine, and just taking it all in. The slower pace of life and the simple pleasures of Italian living really made me further appreciate where I come from.
Both sides of my family on my mother’s and father’s side are all from Molfetta!
This time around, I visited between late August and mid-September which is still the height of summer considerably but the temperatures were not a scorcher compared to other peak summer months. It even got cool enough to wear a light jacket some nights too. One of my favorite things I love to do as a traveler is to just wander out and explore taking in my surroundings seeing life unfold around me. You really get the opportunity to witness how other people live and even get to step outside your comfort zone by having a friendly conversation with a local.
Whether you are having an espresso, gelato, pizza, pasta, or just strolling the piazzas and streets, connecting with the locals in Italy really provides a sense of community between the traveler and the resident. Even a few basic words and phrases will go a long way. I am always still learning the beauty of the Italian language having studied it during high school and a little bit during my undergraduate studies at Ramapo College.
Between sightseeing and seeing family, I would also enjoy taking a stroll along the lungomare taking in the views of the Adriatic Sea. The relaxing aroma of the sea, gentle breezes. and the historic atmosphere really puts one in a peaceful state of mind.
Golden hour in the late evening right before sunset is my absolute favorite time to go out and take some photos! The best natural light provides a phenomenal backdrop to see and remember.
The region of Puglia has become increasingly popular with tourism in recent years and I am so glad to see many travelers flocking to this enchanting part of Italy!
The Port of Molfetta, Il Porto, is a magical place to see by night!
Lots more to come very soon from my trip to Italy!
Until next time! A presto!
